Penwith 2 – Shelves
About this Project
As the second piece in the Penwith series of artistic furniture, these free-standing display shelves draw deep inspiration from the weather-battered Penwith Peninsula, Cornwall. Just like the Penwith 1 Drawer Chest, this piece pays homage to the ancient stone monuments that scatter the Cornish landscape—magnificent structures shaped by centuries of Atlantic gales and timeless history.
The body of the unit is masterfully sculpted from solid Oak, mirroring the now sculptural forms of Cornwall’s historic landmarks. The shelves and focal points feature exquisite bog oak veneer. Sourced from ancient forests preserved underground for up to 4,000 years, this rare material shares a direct timeline with the stone monuments built around 2000 BC. There is a chance that this very tree was growing at the time those ancient monuments were first erected.
Evoking the true atmosphere of the Cornish moors, the finish beautifully captures the imagery of heavy, dramatic clouds looming over the landscape, where deep blacks seamlessly fade into rich, earthy browns.
